Legal Question in Tax Law in Turkey

Transferring inheritance from Turkey to US

In 2002, we inherited an apartment from an uncle in Turkey. We live in the US, and finally decided to sell the property recently. In Turkey, the legal transfer of property is nothing but the rewriting of the deed (literally one piece of paper) that is notarized. No purchase price is listed, no major paperwork is necessary; it's a simple piece of paper. We would now like to bring the money to the US and invest it, but we are concerned that the ''simplicity'' of the selling of property in Turkey (and lack of reams of paperwork that is common in the US) will cause us problems come tax time. What kinds of taxes will we pay in the US? What paperwork do we need? (I honestly do not think that we can get any other paperwork... and in Turkey they just cannot conceive why we'd need it or how to prepare it.) We just don't even know where to begin, but we want to make sure we do everything by the book as far as US taxes go. Any thoughts?
