Legal Question in Family Law in United Kingdom

breach of contract by breaking off engagement

I was engaged and while so my fiance gave me money to clear my credit cards as we were planning on getting married and buying a house together, and wanted to get rid of higher interest loans. A month later he broke off our engagement and I do not have the money to pay him back now and have offered him the engagement ring as compensation as it is worth around the same amount. What are my rights here, as I would never have taken the money from him if I knew he was going to break off the engagement a month later?

Re: breach of contract by breaking off engagement

Hi. In a way you have answered your own question. Your former fiance gave you this money. The money therefore became yours at the date of the gift and he has no legal right to claim its return.

Much the same will apply to your engagement ring. This was given to you, it is now your property, and you have absolutely no obligation to return it.

If I can help you further in this or any other matter please contact us directly.
