Legal Question in Intellectual Property in United Kingdom

Copyright law concerning books and movie making

I am interested in learning the possiblility of making a short film based on J.R.R. Tolkien's work. He wrote many short stories and I wish to practice my skill in film making by directing one in film form. Is it legal for me to direct a movie based on his writing so that I could distribute it freely to my friends and family and to anyone wanted to see an example of my work? (for example If I was applying for a job that required a portfolio of films.) Thank you for your time.

Re: Copyright law concerning books and movie making

Tolkien is still in copyright so you would need a licence from his estate and/or the assignee of the rights in the particular work you propose to base the film on, both to adapt the written work into a script, and make a film from the script
