Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Utah

is it possible for a primary signer on a loan to switch all responsibility onto the co-signer? My wife (before we got married) got a $14000 student loan from chase bank. Her boy friend at the time cosigned and then guilted her into letting him use 12500 of it on his own, and he is paying it.... but the stress of making sure he is making the monthly payments is overwhelming. So, is it possible that my wife can get out from under it and let him just deal with it on his own? Also my wife isn't a Resident of the USA yet... we are working on that.

If the lender agrees to release your wife, then the former boyfriend can assume sole responsibility.
