Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Utah

Broke up with boyfriend

I recently broke up w/boyfriend. We had bought a house together. My name is on the house but not the loan. He wants me to sign off on the house and will not give me the rest of my things until I sign off on the house. Is what he is doing legal, Or do I have any rights as far as getting my things back?

It is legal to ask you to remove your name from the title. However, you do not have to agree to remove it. Depending on how long you were with him you may have some rights to property acquired jointly. Additionally, he cannot retain your stuff and basically hold it hostage. You should probably talk to an attorney before removing your name. You may want to talk to the sheriffs office to help you retrieve your stuff.

He has no legal rights to your property. Whether you have any legal rights to the house depends on whether you contributed to he purchase and payments on the house. You probably did, either directly or because you paid other bills, or you made it easier for him to earn money. You may be entitled to 1/2 of the value of the home today, less the unpaid mortgage. House prices have been rising dramatically, and there may be a lot more equity than you know. Call if you have questions.
