Legal Question in Business Law in Virginia

Church relocation and/or closure

I have pastored a church in VA for 6 years. I live in NC. The church is small and is out of debt. We lease a building and I am not willing to sign again for a lease renewal. There are no deacons or trustees. The membership is about 10.

Can I relocate the church about 1 hour away from Va to NC where I live or do I need to resign and walk away? The church has about 38k in the bank and normal church funishings.

Re: Church relocation and/or closure

If there are no documents nor agreements governing

your tenure and the right to relocate the church, I can see no reason as to why you couldn't do what you've proposed. However, I would think, nevertheless, that you would still want to consult the membership regarding this proposed move and deal equitably with the 38K in church funds and other church property, at least some of which presumably derives from these 10 church members.
