Consultant charged for previous consultant balance owed

I am a consultant operating in the state of Virginia. The company for which I am a consultant has charged me with a balanced owed from the previous consultant. The balanced owed is due to double billing clients for his services. Please advise.

I would need more information about your consultant contract. If you are an independent contractor, not connected to the "previous consultant", I do not understand how any monies owed by someone else could be charged to you.
