what is a merchant required to show a bank as evidence of a purchase made on ones debit card ? can this evidence be used as a receipt to exchange an item purchased?

The notice from the merchant to the bank of the transaction would likely be in the form of an electronic digital code which would not be available to the purchaser as a substitute for a receipt evidencing such purchase.
