Legal Question in Business Law in Virginia

Relocation package change

I was given and accepted a job offer that includes a relocation package. A relocation benefits summary booklet was sent to me and I had discussions with the HR person about 2 features in particular - buyer option (company pays commission, some closing costs) and new home assistance (company pays a % of purchase price). Both of which I was told were included in my package. A month later, another HR person is now saying those are not included due to increased salary and bonus offer. It was never discussed or documented during salary negotiations that they were reducing the relocation benefits. Offer letter only states that relocation is being provided but again, relocation benefits summary document shows the information is included and doesn't say there are any exclusions. Can the company legally make this change? Is this considered an unethical business practice?

Re: Relocation package change

If you can't resolve this with the company, you've got only an argument about a verbal agreement, which means you'd have to prove to a legal standard what the 'real' terms were, and they are denying what you allege. Not a great basis for a lawsuit. Tty to work it out. MAYBE an attorney could help you by persuasion with the company, you know, the subtle hint of litigation, but it could backfire and make them think you are a problem not worth fixing.

Re: Relocation package change

The offer letter which you received from your employer very likely did not constitute a formal contract enforceable at law, and, therefore, as a practical matter, you are very likely without a remedy.
