Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Virginia

defamation of character

I had a customer call my employer and complain that I was in AA. She works at a detention home for delinquents and she is also best friends with an ex employee whom she thinks that I had fired. She told my boss that I was unethical because she found out I went to AA and that she is now threatening to take her business elsewhere due to the fact that I work in this location, mind you, this woman works with children who have substance abuse problems and are trying to be rehab. Do I have any legal recourse for such things? She also told my boss that she was going to come up there and give me a peice of her mind. This was all due to a former employee with a grudge. Is there anything that I can do, my rights were violated and if I was not strong in my own recovery this could have caused some grave dangers to my sobriety and my well-being.

Re: defamation of character

You should consult an attorney about sending her a letter to cease and desist making slanderous statements about you and filing suit if necessary. It takes a pretty pathetic person to attack someone in an anonymous recovery program.
