Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

Last minute debt

My inlaws recently sold their house and at closing a bank credit card claimed they owned money. The debt was incured 1991 and they have lived at the same address for thirty plus years and during that time no one have contacted them about the debt. The debt is about $3000 plus unspecified interest. We question both the debt and particularly interest because no one have giving us an actual dollar amount.

Re: Last minute debt

Indded, question you should and fast by having your in-laws make a written demand for credible proof that the person(s)who they claim owe the money in fact owe it.

It's possible, of course, that your in-laws may have had a credit card back then with this bank secured by the equity in their property, and, subsequently, they made charges, which, somehow and for some reason, they never paid and forgot about. You have not stated how old your in-laws are, which could ,also, be a factor in this situation.
