Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

Several months ago, I tried to cancel my membership with a health club. They told me that they have something called 30-day policy which they will charge for another month after I request a cancellation.

I said I don't want to do that, but they said it's the only option and it was on contract which I singed. I was kind of upset with their attitude so I decided to call my bank to cancel my credit card so they can't take any money out of my account. Several months later, they called me saying that I owe them over $200 (3 months) and they said I have to pay for it. I told them I'm not going to pay for it because I have not used the club since the day I tried to cancel my membership and also they wouldn't let me use the club anyways for the 3-month period. Do I still have to pay for it? Also, will they sue for it?
