Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

Warrent of Debt notice

I recieved a Warrent of debt notice from Prince william co.

for a bad check that was in march of this year. I was told I have to turn myself in and go before the magistrate.

What can I expect and will I be kept there till bond is set and posted or allowed to go and make arrangememts to settle the debt. ? This was my first offense due to a divorce and being laid off from my job during that period. I have since gained employement and am working toward paying back any outstanding debts I incured during that period. My feeling is why would they keep me in jail so that I couldn't work to pay off the debt ? HELP !!

Re: Warrent of Debt notice

A warrant in debt is a lawsuit. If it's a warrant in debt, you don't have to turn yourself in. Rather, you can defend the case by showing up at the return date and requesting a trial date. If you don't, a civil judgment will be entered against you, but you will not go to jail. Now, if this is not a warrant in debt, but an arrest warrant for a criminal bad check charge, that's another story. If you can't tell the difference, I suggest you see a lawyer ASAP.
