Is it legal for police officers to enter a home uninvited to make an arrest for a class 1 misdemeanor (including simple assault)?

A police officer normally cannot enter a private residence to make an arrest without the consent of the legal occupant or a proper warrant. In certain jurisdictions under certain circumstances where officers are in hot pursuit of the alleged felon, they are permitted to make warrantless entries.
