Legal Question in Criminal Law in Virginia

pulled over in chesapeake, va for a "license plate light" being out- but i am not sure how he knew that because he was parked on the side of the road and we did a U turn but never drove past him to the point where he could see the back of the car but he was already pulling out of his spot before we were even fully turned around. also, i just got my vehicle inspected two days before the incident and i know that they check the license plate lights as part of the inspection. anyways- got pulled over, he said he smelled marijuana and then searched the car and got charged with civil possession of marijuana (first offender). what should i do?
