Legal Question in Criminal Law in Virginia

I am in the state of Virginia. I have been charged with embezzlement 200+ from my last employer. Loss Prevention was there to meet me with an officer in 1/11. Loss Prevention had me write a statement and he sent away the officer. While talking to Loss Prevention about the situation after I was done with the statement he told me he was going to keep it inhouse. He was going to have someone in his office contact me about paying the money back because he said he knew that it was not my normal behavior and I was remorseful and wanting to pay it back. Upon leaving he asked me to give him my current address and phone number and asked that if for some chance I moved or changed my number to let his office know, and I did just that. Feb 2012 my ex husband told me that detectives came to his parents house looking for me. I called Loss Prevention right about about this and he told me there had been a mistake and to stay calm he would call and get back to me. He never got back to me at all. I didn't know how to look it up so I thought he had handled it. Well 3/13 2 Detectives came to my home, I was not here my sister was and she gave them my work address. The detectives showed up at my work letting me know they had a warrant for me and were there to arrest me. They did not end up arresting me because they saw that I was the store manager and I had 2 kids and did not want to put either in risk and to turn myself in to him as soon as I could he would have me in and out as fast as he could. I did just that the next morning at 8am. He was very nice and was telling what was going to happen that day. After arriving he took me to the magistrate to be processes explained that I turned myself in and was no trouble at all. The magistrate looked me up in the computer for all states I guess and turned up that there were several charges in another state with my DOB, SSN and name. Because of this he was unable to give me a PR bond. He said he had no doubt it wasn't me since I let him know I had not been to said state since I was 12 so he issued the least he could. It was a 1500 dollar bond. And I was released 7 hours later. Long story with bondsmen. No one wanted to come out there for such a small bond and they failed to let me know this. I went to my first court date to determine council and was approved for a public defender and not assigned one for another week. But to get to the point now... Will I receive jail time? This is my first and will be my last offense. I am 33 a single mother of 2 small children and guardian of my nephew. I have no family and I am scared to death. I know what I did was wrong and I have regreted it everyday for the last 2 years. I have no idea what is going to happen. I don't know what I would do if I did get jail time. I don't know what happens from here the steps that go on or anything. The detective that put the warrant out on me wants to sit and talk with me and I don't know if that is something I am supposed to do or what. I'm very lost right now and don't know where to turn I love my job and I would of course lose my job over this and really wouldn't be able to pay back as fast as I could with a job... Please help me!

Every one of these questions here should be addressed to your recently appointed public defender (in my opinion), but

speaking with the detective on your case without your attorney

being present would be most inadvisable (I can say with certainty).
