Legal Question in Criminal Law in Virginia

i have been supeona to court for brandishing my firearm. This guy (boyfriend of my niece) was beating her up and had been for 2 days, threw cinderblock on her foot and broke it trying to prevent her from leaving, pulled some her hair out and tried to chock her and she had bruises on her breast and armpit. I was called by one of her friends to come and get her because the friend was afraid for her. When I got there my niece opened the car door and the boyfriend came from behind her and attempted to stick his head into my vehicle. Being aware of the situation and his drug abuse, I pulled my firearm on him in which I have a permit to carry. There are witnesses that can account of the happenings. Do I need an attorney or just present my case?
