Child custody

we have been married 17 years now and about 5 years ago i cheated because he was mentally abusive to me so he pushed me into someone elses arms. I was only gone with this other man for 2 months and then i moved back home. We went to court for the kids but when we got there he dropped the case because we had worked things out. Now after 5 years of being back together he says it's not working. Can i file for full custody of my kids and get child support? How do i start?
