Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

Child Support

My childs father disappeared on his son for a little over a year and November of last year, I filed for child support which helped to located him. At the Child Support hearing in March 2006, the judge ordered him to pay back support from the date of the application. He was unaware of the year that he was gone and didn't not provide support. Is possible to get the back support adjusted to included that time of absence?
