Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

My partner obtained a divorced in the state of Virginia. We both want to live together but she is concerned about losing her alimony.

We were told that one way to avoid the cohabitation provision in her divorce decree is if one of us pays the other to rent a room and pays with a check or money order every month, also avoid joint banking accounts and purchasing property together.

How do we circumvent the cohabitation provision in her divorce?

The best way is not to cohabit. You can do all sorts of things to try to "circumvent" this, but in the end none of the ruses may work and it could come back to haunt you. Good luck.

According to Rule 8.4(c) of the Virginia Rules of Professional Conduct, "[i]t is professional misconduct for a lawyer to . . . engage in conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit or misrepresentation which reflects adversely on the lawyers fitness to practice law."

You are asking that an attorney advise you how to deceive your partner's ex-spouse for the purpose of evading a legally binding contract.

I do not believe that you are going to get an answer to your question from a Virginia attorney.
