Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

What rights does the father of my unborn child have?

I'm four weeks pregnant with a ''friends'' baby. This ''friend'' is not happy about it and has threatened me, the unborn baby and my family saying he will kill if I don't get an abortion. I filed a police report against him recently for threatening with intent to kill. I want to know what rights he will have once the baby is born. I am planning on marrying my fiance, not the father, but I am not sure what effect that will have on custody rights and such. Does the father need to ''sign-off'' or anything for me to go forward with this marriage? And what are his rights??

Re: What rights does the father of my unborn child have?

The putative father of your child does not need to "sign off" or give his permission in order for you to proceed with your marriage to another.

Once the child is born, like any other such putative father, the child's biological father will have the right to petition the court to have paternity established with corollary visitation rights and the obligation to pay child support.
