Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

My ex, whom I share a house with, and I are in dispute over which property belongs to whom. Can I file a court case for a judge to decide who get/owns what? Also how do I get a court hearing for a judge to force the sell of the home, as well.

Normally this is done during a divorce. You say the person is your "ex". Were you married? Are you now divorced?

Either way there are ways to do this, yes.

If two people own a house together and you want to divide your interests, you can file a "partition" case which will work to divide the house -- or more likely to sell it and divide the money.

I am not sure what kind of property (other than the house) you are referring to. But it might also be addressed by a partition suit if it did belong to both of you but now you want to divide it.

If you believe it belongs to you and the other person disputes that, you could file a declaratory judgment lawsuit or a "detinue" action.

If you were married or got a divorce without having property distribution, you may need to file a divorce-related "equitable distribution" lawsuit.

If I can help you here in Prince William County as an attorney, let me know. I can't work for free, but you won't find a lawyer who charges less.
