is it illegal to knowingly compensate an illegal alien ? What specific law does this violate?

It is a violation of federal law to hire a worker who lacks proper documentation
showing that s/he is eligible to work at gainful employment
in the United States. This requirement does not necessarily
have anything to do with "to knowingly compensate an illegal alien".
