Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Virginia

Therapeutic use of music

As a licensed professional counselor, certified to apply and provide an internationally recognized type of music therapy, how do copyright laws affect my use of recorded music in creating therapeutic programs to teach/achieve relaxation and cognitive therapy skills? Therapeutic Programs are played in the therapy session and may consist of several cuts of music copied onto a CD to reduce interruption in the session, possibly edited for volume or excerpted. The programs are not distributed to clients for personal use. Can one professional provide copies of a program to other professionals for evaluation/research in the development of new therapeutic programs?

Re: Therapeutic use of music

There is no easy answer. We have to know if there is a copyright on the informaiton and how it was done. Likely this would require some research if you do not know. We also have to know what the CDs consist of (ie are you using other material to which someone else holds a copyright or other IP right). This question needs a lot more very specific and detailed informaiton to answer.
