Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

Terms of employment changed

I have been working under a letter of

appointment, with a SOW, detailing

reporting chain, place of work, title,

benefits, etc. The boss has told me

that I have a new title, different

responsibilities, will have to move to

a town 3 hours away, and report to

his deputy. I brought up the

agreement, he says I am not to talk

about it again. What is the legal

status of an appointment letter

(signed by corporate HR and myself)?

Employment is at will, but do I have

any other recourse than to quit? It's

tough, because I agree with the

necessity of the changes, but they're

making me take a job I didn't sign up

to do in a place I don't want to live.

Re: Terms of employment changed

The issue (from a legal perspective) would seem to involve whether or not this letter of appointment/agreement is an enforceable contract containing terms which would allow to you to contest these proposed changes/relocation.

If it is not, then I would have to conclude that you are most likely without viable recourse.
