Vacation day

Can you use a vacation or sick day when you have a family emergancy and have to leave work early? In the employee handbook it says it would be unpaid. Is this legal?

Yes, Virginia employers are under no legal obligation to provide either paid vacation or sick leave to their employees and therefore have virtually unfettered discretion in deciding how these employees may use such leave.
