Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

Im living with my boyfriend and i have asked him to leave, his name isnt on the lease or any of the bills but because he helps pay the bills i was told i cant make him leave without a 30 day notice, is that true or can i ask him to leave and if he dosent get the sheriff to make him and remove his stuff?

Better treat him like a subleasing tenant and give him at least 30 days advance written notice to vacate the premises. (Keep a copy for your records.)
