Legal Question in Legal Ethics in Virginia

referral fee

In my malpractice case, a settlement of $300,000.00 was awarded to me. I got $152,000 of it. The first lawyer I saw, who immediately sent me to another lawyer and never worked on the case, got 10% and the lawyer who worked the case got the rest. Is this ethical?

Re: referral fee

Generally, if the agreement was disclosed to you up front, the referring lawyer had joint responsibility for the matter (not shared work - just responsibility), and the total fee was reasonable, then it is not unethical.
