Cant afford a lawyer or settlement

What happens to you if your being sued and you cannot afford a defense lawyer or a settlement in a civil court case?

In a civil case, you can go into court without a lawyer. Some people do a good job of defending themselves "pro se" (without a lawyer).

However, you should call the clerk of the court and ask about the "legal aid" society in your area. These free services for the poor are under-used, and it is a shame. If you qualify, you can receive a lawyer for free or reduced rates.
