I am renting. They now want to sell the house and want me to fix things right now before the showing and my lease is not up until March. They want me to paint the walls and professionally clean the carpet. What are my legal rights in VA?

Unless your lease requires you to perform these "refurbishments" of the rental
some two months before your lease expires, it would be my opinion that you have no obligation to do so.
