Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia

Suing someone over a lease

I recently had troubles where I entered into an apartment lease with someone, and after some domestic disputes between the two of us, the other party left the state before allowing me to break the lease legally, leaving me with the lease to pay and all the money required to do so. Are there any ways I can sue said party because of failing to allow me to break the lease in the correct way?

Yes, under these facts you should be able to sue this absconding party for contribution and recover in damages his or her share of the rent which you ended up having to pay.

But there's a hitch, of course, meaning that you will first have to find him or her in the state where this person is now residing and sue her or him in the small claims court of that particular state.
