Legal Question in Traffic Law in Virginia

was issued a summons from a Va.. state trooper for misuse of antique tags section 46-2-730. He told me I could pay the fine and not go to court. He also checked a box on the the summons that read I could avoid going to court by calling a number that he filled in a box on the summons ..When I called to request the amount of the fine I was told I had to come to court ..this charge is a class 4misemanor.. is this a valid summons?

Per Va Code Sec 18.2-11, the penalty for one convicted of a Class 4 misdemeanor is a fine not

to exceed $250.00 (no jail). I would suggest that you call the clerk's office--General District Court (traffic)

for the jurisdiction in which you've been charged and asked one of the clerks to clarify whether

you actually need to appear or instead may mail in whatever fine that may be involved with this offense.
