Legal Question in Disability Law in Washington

Handicap Parking in Apt. Complex

Hello, I Live in an apartment complex that switched to a free for all parking. I have a child with a disability who has a handicap permit. Management is aware of this and did provide a handicap parking spot that is accessible to my apt., however, there are now a couple different neighbors who either have a handicap permit or has relatives that does. The problem I am having is they seem to be using the handicap parking spot. The management has told me it is a handicap spot for all who has a permit. I was also told if I would like a reserved spot I can pay for one. But where there reserved spots are located are not accessible free to my apt.(also I'm on a limited budget)

Should the handicap spot that was provided for my son at the front of my apt. be reserved so it is accessable for him?

Re: Handicap Parking in Apt. Complex

Washington has state laws preventing discrimination in housing based upon disabilities. ("WLAD") It is under Title 49, which looks like the employment statutes, but it is there.

There is a Human Rights Commission in Olympia, with offices in other cities. I suggest you contact them for a hearing. You are requesting a reasonable accomodation in order to have equal access to housing.

Those words are critical, so use them.
