illegal eavesdropping?

If I'm called in to my client's office to

work on their workstation, and they've

left their email open on their

workstation's desktop, is it illegal to

read the email that is open there?

You probably do not have criminal liability. Depending on circumstances you may have civil liability for invasion of privacy, and you may have other civil liability depending on how you used the information.
