Can they hold this againest my son

Son 18(7years ago) was arrested for shoplifting a CD at Target. The in store security tried to grab him as he ran out the door and fell down. They listed assault on the record. It was later dropped. The shoplifting stood and was differed and was suppose to be gone after 1 year. Now 7 years later my son wants to be a policeman and applied for an internship at a Police Department. He was turned down due to this record. I thought this was to be gone, Can they hold this againest him, they listed the assault as the main reason for denial.

He needs to clear up his record. Essentially each police agency has discretion in the hiring process, however the assault should not have counted against him. If you want to discuss further I am at [email protected]
