Can a legal adult (18) fight back in self defense to a minor (17)?

Need more facts. Hypothetically if an adult was being attacked by a seventeen year old and the adult hit back, that can be used as a legal defense. Many factors come into play though such as body sizes, mental comprehension, physical abilities, gender, if there were any objects being used as a weapon.
