A conviction for a any felony offense committed on or after July1, 1984, results in a firearm disability under state and federal law. Generally, the right to possess firearms can be restored five years after the date of conviction or release from incarceration (whichever is later). A new five year waiting period commences with any subsequent conviction for any offense. There are other factors that affect eligibility.

For felonies committed prior to July 1, 1984, other than those felonies listed in RCW 9.41.040(4), the person is not prohibited if he or she received a probationary (deferred or suspended) sentence AND received a dismissal after successful completion of the sentence.

Offenders with a class A felony of sex offense must have an unconditional governor's pardon based upon innocence or rehabilitation to remove a firearm disability.
