Is it a good idea for a wife to file for divorce to protect herself from her husband's serious debt problems?

Dissolution of Marriage (the legal term for divorce in Washington) may not protect the wife from the husband's debts, especially if those debts were incurred during the marriage, in which case they are presumed to be community debt that each is responsible for. That presumption of community debt can be rebutted, but depending on the circumstances of how and when the debt was incurred, that may not be possible.

If I were you, I would consult a local attorney on this issue before you go to the trouble of filing for divorce.
