Legal Question in Family Law in Washington

Spousal Support

I have been married 21 years. I have asked for a divorce, I stayed home the majority of our marriage to care for the children. My husband makes $70,000 to my $20,000 annually. Is there a formula to figure out how much support I am entitled to and for how long?

Re: Spousal Support

There is a table/formula for child support, but spousal maintenance is does not have specific formula. The considerations for spousal maintenance include but are not limited to relative income, potential for income, age of parties, purpose of maintenance. Courts tend to favor maintenance to support education or skill development to support more future income. Spousal maintenance has been granted for life, but that is generally for exceptional circumstances; more probable is 1-5 years to support skill development. Let me know if I can help you with this.
