liability of stolen property

bought item(s) - did not know that items were stolen - do not know at this time if stolen items are covered/reported by victim's insurance - thieves were caught/told police we had no knowledge of stolen goods/are now in jail - Worse case scenario-items will be retrieved/we are out $$ - We will not be victims to this created mess/will not forfeit items until $$ is given back- What can be done in this case?

Re: liability of stolen property

The general rule is that "a thief cannot acquire good title." In other words, the original owners retain their ownership despite the theft.
