Re: first time shoplift in Washington state

The punishment will depend on the particular charge. Theft is generally a "crime involving moral turpitude" which can have an adverse effect on your immigration status. You can fall within the "petty theft exception" if you get a sentence less than 6 months where the maximum sentence available is one year. I would strongly advise you get an immigration lawyer and a criminal lawyer who understands the immigration consequences. Feel free to call my office if you would like further assistance. Best of luck.

Unfortunately, even a first time theft offense can impact your immigration and get you removed from the US. The outcome of the case and the immigration consequence will depend on the outcome arranged by your attorney. I practice both criminal and immigration law.
