Legal Question in Employment Law in Washington

My 17 year old daughter has been dating a boy for 3 years. He is 1 year older than she is. (she is a senior in high school this year) he just accepted a job as a coach at a the middle school in the same district and they told them they had to break up. Is that right? I have no problems with them together and he doesn't have any type of "coaching contact" with her at all. I'm confused how they can do this?
