Payment for pain and suffering as result of auto accident

In settling an automobile accident I would like to know guidelines on how to arrive at a

settlement amount for pain and suffering resulting from the accident. The other party was at

fault and their insurance company acknowledges that. While the actual losses for our

automobile have been reimbursed, I have lasting psycological problems, ie, panic attacks while

driving on the freeway since the accident. How do I prove this condition exists only since the

accident? It was a traumatic accident whereby our van was totaled but injuries were relatively

minor. All injuries have been treated except for residual blood vessel damage on my face from

burns and abrasions due to airbag impact. My wife is 67 and I am 71 and we are both so "up

tight" now while driving on freeways that it has ruined our retired lifestyle that we enjoyed

by taking motor trips. Thanks for considering this question. The insurance company has
