question about slander

do I have a case against the head of my local chamber of commerce for slandering my business. I have proof that he was talking negatively about my business to someone who was upset about being charged a cancellation fee.

Although you may have a valid claim, you must determine what your motivations are for bringing an action. You may be required to prove damages in your claim or damages may be presumed depending on the facts of your case.

Determining what your damages are is important. If your damages are small, pursuing an action may be too expensive to be worthwhile. In the alternative, you may want to send the individual and the Chamber a cease and desist letter to indicate the event and how it has or will impact your business. You may want to have an attorney draft such a letter for you, in the event you wish to sue at a later date if your damages prove to be substantial.
