Legal Question in Tax Law in Washington

in the beginning 2011 i filed my taxes under a 1099, independent contractor. in my case i owed money instead of anticipating a refund. i filed as a single taxpayer, and now have back taxes of $412. well im married now and for the first time me and my husband are filing together. we aware that by doing so the taxes that i owe will come out of his return. the only problem were having is, making sure that it does. hes doing his taxes with turbotax and we are unclear how, or if that would affect the course of my back taxes being paid, as opposed to having a real person do them. the real question is: will my back taxes still be paid off if we do them electronically? or do i need to see someone in person for them to help with out situation?

Even if you file electronically, they will take the amount owed before they issue a refund. This might have been more of an issue when they were doing "Rapid Refunds" and things of this nature because you were in essence taking a short term loan.

But as long as it is a straight refund from the government, it does not matter how you file. They will see your SSN on the joint return and take the refund before a check is issued. It is all handled via computer, so your chances of avoiding it are very slim. But if they for some reason send you a full refund, you need to call the IRS number and get the rest paid. They will take your debit card. The penalties for that kind of thing are pretty ridiculous in the first two years, and best to just get it paid.
