There are a number of related things that usually need to be done when an organization seeks to get non-profit status. One is filing for 501(c)(3) status. That alone is a time consuming task. There are a lot of decisions that need to be made by an experienced professional to get the right type of organization set up. Does it become a public charity or a private foundation? Etc. In addition, the entity itself may require incorporation, need employee numbers, sales tax exemption, and the like. Fees to cover the 501 status application are the most, usually in the area of $2,500 to $4,500, plus costs, such as filing fees. The other items will depend on what is set up, and typically run another $500 to $2,000. Sometimes you can find an attorney and accountant who are interested in the charitable cause and they may do some of the work for less. If they have the necessary experience, that may be a good route. If not, I highly recommend someone who does. We have handled dozens, and maybe even hundreds of these.
