Legal Question in Criminal Law in Wisconsin

Cashing a check I reported stolen

My purse was stolen and because I was desperate for money, I picked up and cashed a Federal Finacial Aid check from my school. I reported the check stolen as well. By the time I came to my senses I was in too deep and now I'm not sure what to do. I want to confess to it, but I'm afraid I will go to jail. I have one child and I'm also 7 months pregnant. I know that they are going to find out I'm the one who cashed it because they are taking fingerprints. I can't afford an attorney and I'm pretty sure I'm not eligible for a public defender. Please help me! I want to come clean but I'm afraid....what do you think I should do?

Facing the inevitable

I would suggest that you contact a local attorney who primarily practices in the area of criminal law. He or she will know the prosecutors, judges, etc. and will best be able to advise you about the law of your state. Your indication of having no money is precisely what probably will qualify you for the services of the public defender. Please don't wait to contact a lawyer.
