Legal Question in Family Law in Wisconsin

I had a child with a man and we are unmarried and have no plans to marry. How is custody of the child normally handled? I was told that since we are unmarried that the mother gets custody and the father gets visitation.

That is not correct.

The mother, by default, is the custodial parent until a court issues an Order regarding custody and parenting time. There is a presumption under Wisconsin law to maximize time with each parent which often means a form of shared custody. The court makes such decisions based on a best interests of the child standard.
