Legal Question in Family Law in Wisconsin

I am divorced. I share custody of my 13yo daughter with my now ex wife. She has placement. In our divorce settlement I am required to pay 50% of medical expenses. Does this include braces? I would tend to think these would be considered a cosmetic expense.

I do not practice in your state but I expect a kid's teeth are the same here as there.

Sometimes braces could be used for cosmetic reasons. Sometimes even kids with straight looking teeth need braces because the bite is off a little. Without braces to correct the alignment, the joint can become worn from being out of alignment. At that point, TMJ pain becomes a problem, as does the damaged joint.

As much as a child might be angry that the parent "made me" get braces, consider how the child will feel later, knowing that you denied a corrective procedure that could have prevented all the pain and expense the adult child is experiencing.

Talk to the orthodontist. Ask to see the x-rays. Get a second opinion if you aren't satisfied with the first ortho's opinion. Just don't deny your child preventing health care.
