Legal Question in Family Law in Wisconsin

sole custody of child

According to my case worker they will give me placement and us joint custody where my sons father has to give ''reasonable'' notice of visitation. My son was born in New Jersey. His father and I never married. I live in Wisconsin where the petition was filed for child support. My friend tells me I should try to get sole custody so I can make desions without the fathers consent due to the fact that we live in different states. Is this possible and how do I go about doing it if it is?

Re: sole custody of child

Joint custody is presumed in Wisconsin and you are not likely to change that (never say never of course). However the upon motion by either party the court can direct who has the right to make major decisions on behalf of the child. And ordinarily, in the absence of a specific order to the contrary, one parent does not need the approval of the other to authorize health care.
